z Tifton HERD Program The 16th HERD program at the Tifton Bull Evaluation Center in Irwinville is under way. The center received 166 heifers Oct. 6. The heifers were worked for the second time Nov. 12. Lee Jones, University of Georgia (UGA) College of Veterinary Medicine, and his team conducted the reproductive tract maturity scores and pelvic area measurements. Lutalyse was to be injected Dec. 12. All heifers were to be bred Dec. 15 and injected with GnRH. Cleanup bulls were to be placed with the heifers Dec. 23. The Tifton HERD sale is scheduled for April 21, 2015. Eligible bulls were born Sept. 1-Nov. 30, 2013. High-ADG Angus—Lot 67; owner: MPAC Angus, Marvin Zeigler, Bamberg, S.C.; sire: Nichols Quiet Lad T9; ADG: 4.71 lb.; ADG ratio: 125; WDA: 3.57 lb.; WDA ratio: 112; wt.: 1,415 lb. High-WDA Angus—Lot 59; owner: Clark Hill Angus Farm, Jefferson, Ga.; sire: SAV Angus Valley 1867; ADG: 4.11 lb.; ADG ratio: 109; WDA: 3.69 lb.; WDA ratio: 116; wt.: 1,603 lb. Bulls entered in the senior test must have been born Sept. 1-Dec. 31, 2013. Bulls entered in the junior test must have been born Jan. 1-March 15, 2014. There are 94 Angus bulls on test. Interim weights were scheduled for Dec. 15, 2014, and Jan. 12, 2015. Bulls will be weighed off test Feb. 9 and 11. The test sale is scheduled for March 21. Bulls will be fed by breed. Breeds that do not have adequate numbers to fill a pen (typically 50 head) will be commingled with other breeds and fed together. There will be two divisions within the junior Angus breed test. Those divisions will be the traditional growth division and a low-birth-weight (LBW) division. The 112-day test is for bulls born Aug. 15-Nov. 30, 2013. Nominations were due July 9, with bulls accepted for delivery July 30. Bulls were to be weighed off test Dec. 1-2. High-ADG Angus—Lot 22; owner: Rainbow Angus, Homer Stout, Piney Flats, Tenn.; sire: SAV Brand Name 9115; ADG: 5.07 lb.; ADG ratio: 131; WDA: 3.24 lb.; WDA ratio: 105; wt.: 1,315 lb.; frame: 6.0 High-WDA Angus—Lot 14; owner: H&H; Farm, Buddy Hamrick, Boiling Springs; sire: Sitz Upward 307R; ADG: 2.77 lb.; ADG ratio: 72; WDA: 3.66 lb.; WDA ratio: 118; wt.: 1,580 lb.; frame: 6.7 Angus averages (28 head)—ADG: 3.86 lb.; WDA: 3.09 lb.; wt.: 1,230 lb.
